1984 | The Beginning
It all began in 1984 when Dave Pickering, founder of Preventure, had an idea. As an employee benefits professional and the co-owner of a New England based employee benefits brokerage firm, he knew that healthy employees would have a huge impact on a company’s bottom line.
During Dave’s tenure at Healthtrax, a fitness and wellness company, he was the first in the industry to provide health club memberships and wellness programs as employee benefits. This offering became a new division called Healthtrax Corporate Services, Inc. and earned Healthtrax the nickname the “Corporate Wellness People.”
Meanwhile, Preventure Partner and CEO Mark Correia was beginning his fitness career with Healthtrax. Mark was charged with overseeing four of the largest multi-purpose fitness and recreation facilities Healthtrax owned in New England, responsible for transitioning these clubs from recreation-focused to fitness and wellness-based.
In the late 1980s, Mark and Dave’s paths crossed at Healthtrax, and they developed a model that integrated the Healthtrax Corporate Services concept into the health club environment.
1991 | International Fitness Club Network and Preventure are Launched
Studies began to document the benefits of corporate wellness programs, and companies were taking notice. Recognizing this, Dave left Healthtrax to launch the International Fitness Club Network (IFCN) in 1991. This network was one of the first of its kind to provide regional and national corporations and health insurers with a single source for health clubs and wellness programs. With Dave’s departure, Mark took over the Corporate Services program where he expanded it to include onsite health promotion and wellness services, as well as worksite rehabilitation and injury prevention programs.
After nearly a decade of success, Dave and team transformed the business to Preventure to offer clients fully integrated fitness and wellness benefits with additional fitness options including walking programs, home fitness equipment, and self-paced wellness programs.
2003 | A New Era
Mark left his position at Healthtrax in 2003 to join Dave and take on the role of partner at Preventure. During the next two decades, Dave and Mark would develop a new corporate wellness model with the goal of making Preventure the country’s leading provider of comprehensive wellness and fitness solutions for corporations and health insurers.
This model was designed to ensure that they were building and implementing successful, innovative strategies that were customized for each client. It was this approach that laid the foundation for our proprietary process called PATH – People Achieving Total Health.
With Preventure’s success, Dave became a pioneer in the corporate wellness industry. He was sought after for speaking opportunities around the world and asked to join the Wellness Accreditation Advisory Board of the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC). His expertise was critical in developing measures and standards by which corporate wellness providers are credentialed in the U.S. today.
Preventure’s Senior Management Team grew to include Laura Walmsley, Chief Business Development Officer, and Kathy O?Neel Webster, Senior VP of Operations. Their experience and passion for corporate wellness propelled Preventure to even greater heights. Under their direction, Preventure has further developed its proprietary programs: the PATH Health Improvement Model and the outcomes-driven total Return on Wellness Model ? both key differentiators for the company.
Since its launch in 1991, Preventure has served over 10 million lives and over 200 clients, with programs in all 50 U.S. states and international reach for select services. Preventure continues to lead the way in the corporate wellness industry by providing customized offerings and incorporating revolutionary technology into every ROI-driven solution. With such great success, Preventure is looking forward to delivering solutions that incorporate the latest innovations in corporate wellness for the next decade and beyond.
